    The Friday Five 002

      1. What was the first band you saw in concert?
OK, well let me just preface my answer with the fact that my friend’s mother bought us both tickets to see the Uncanny X-Men (yes…the shame, the shame) when I was in Year 8 and my parents wouldn’t let me go. Grrr. So…my first concert was actually when I was 14 - I saw Inxs at the Tennis Centre. They rocked.

      2. Who is your favorite artist/band now?
There is no way known that I could have one favourite. This is too hard!

      3. What’s your favorite song?
Oh God. See the answer above. Well…Carolyn’s Fingers by the Cocteau Twins always makes me happy…so that would be up there in the top five, at least!

      4. If you could play any instrument, what would it be?
The fiddle. I wanted to learn it when I was little (so I could carry around a cool looking violin case) but I got shunted off to piano lessons instead.

      5. If you could meet any musical icon (past or present), who would it be and why?
Hum. I think I’d have to meet David Gedge of The Wedding Present. Yep.

      The Friday Five 003

        1. Who is your favorite celebrity?
        Susan Sarandon

        2. Who is your least favorite?
        That Diddy Daddy Puff guy.

        3. Have you ever met or seen any celebrities in real life?
        Yes

        4. Would you want to be famous? Why or why not?
Yes please! Why? Oh, I just crave money and attention ;o)

        5. If you had to trade places with a celebrity for a day, who would you choose and why?
I keep having to remind myself that celebrity means; A person of distinction or renown; — usually in the plural; as, he is one of the celebrities of the place. Hmmm. I cannot think who I’d be! Maybe Kim Deal from The Breeders.

        The Friday Five 004

Well, I wasn’t at work long enough on Friday to do my Friday Five (or anything else for that matter!) so here it is…though some questions may be slightly skewed by the fact that I’m posting this on Sunday…

          1. What was the last TV show you watched?
Last night we got out the video of Minority Report, which sat unwatched because Fred and Ginger were on the ABC in Shall We Dance….

          2. What was the last thing you complained about?
Living in this house! It’s the size of a caravan and I’m plauged by the fact that it has pale blue carpet (well it was blue when we moved in, now it’s a charming shade of grey) and that my parents are the landlords…untenable.

          3. Who was the last person you complimented and what did you say?
Dylan. I told him he was excellent for making so much progress on the video clip so quickly!

          4. What was the last thing you threw away?
Most of the crap on my study floor.

          5. What was the last website (besides this one) that you visited?
          The Movable Type support forum.

          The Friday Five 005

            1. Would you consider yourself an organized person? Why or why not?
No. I try, and occasionally succeed, but as I’m sitting here surrounded by piles of paper, none of which is in any sort of order…I have to say no - I am not organised.

            2. Do you keep some type of planner, organizer, calendar, etc. with you, and do you use it regularly?
I have a palm pilot, a diary, a work calendar and a home calendar…um…and I use none of them with any kind of regularity. I’m so bad.

            3. Would you say that your desk is organized right now?
            Is this a joke?

            4. Do you alphabetize CDs, books, and DVDs, or does it not matter?
The only thing I have ever alpabetised is my vinyl collection. I can find things amidst my own chaos - it’s just that other people flouder hopelessly when they encounter it.

            5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to organize?
Artwork for CDs - the fonts, the colours, the conflicting software programs…I could go on. Even organising a punk rock Wilderness Society Benefit gig was easier!

            The Friday Five 006

              1. What drinking water do you prefer — tap, bottle, purifier, etc.?
Well, until I worked here, I would have said that I’m quite happy slumming it with tap water. But…the water from the pipes in the room that I work in deliver water that tastes like it’s been experimented on. Soooo…I walk down the corridor and up two flights of stairs to the next floor where the filtered water tap is. I use the scary water for tea (on the assumption that the scariness is all boiled out of it and the taste is masked by tea).

Oh - and when I go to Adelaide and Hervey Bay, I drink bottled water because the water in both those places tastes like it’s come straight from a public swimming pool.

              2. What are your favourite flavor of chips?
              Plain.

              3. Of all the things you can cook, what dish do you like the most?
Soyaroni with creamy mushroom sauce, snow peas and parmesan cheese.

              4. How do you have your eggs?
              Poached

              5. Who was the last person who cooked you a meal? How did it turn out?
OMG. Last night. M made me a warm chicken salad with lime dressing and fried potatos. I almost passed out in joy.

              The Friday Five 007

                1. What brand of toothpaste do you use?
Whatever is cheapest and not too scary.

                2. What brand of toilet paper do you prefer?
Anything that uses recycled paper. See Question 1

                3. What brand(s) of shoes do you wear?
Doc Martens. And anything else I happen to fancy. But Docs on a daily basis.
Bring on the thongs! (Thongs are shoes.)

                4. What brand of soda do you drink?
Tiro Pink Grapefruit. That’s it. That, and water.

                5. What brand of gum do you chew?
                Any. Don’t care.

                The Friday Five 008

                  1. What do you most want to be remembered for?
My writing, my music and my diehard quest to escape fulltime work.

                  2. What quotation best fits your outlook on life?

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing.
                  Agatha Christie

                  3. What single achievement are you most proud of in the past year?
Oh bother. There’s three. But I’ll just say one. Getting my eyes lasered.
                  Woooo yeah!

                  4. What about the past ten years?
                  Oh god. Too hard.

                  5. If you were asked to give a child a single piece of advice to guide them through life, what would you say?
Whatever they try to tell you, you will NEVER need to know how to do long-division.

                  The Friday Five 009

                    1. How many times have you truly been in love?
Hmmm. Tricky. Maybe 2 or three times?

                    2. What was/is so great about the person you love(d) the most?
Their ability to make me laugh and take me on adventures.

                    3. What qualities should a significant other have?
Humour, tolerance, compassion, warm feet, the ability to cook gourmet masterpieces…

                    4. Have you ever broken someone’s heart?
Probably, but not on purpose :o(

                    5. If there was one thing you could teach people about love, what would it be?
Be prepared to overlook the trivial stuff about someone else that threatens to send you insane. You’ll be much happier (if you can manage it, that is!!)

                    The Friday Five 010

Ooh, I’ve missed the last two Friday Fives due to moving and general dramas.
                      1. What were your favorite childhood stories?
                      Flat Stanley
                      Anything by Enid Blyton
                      Nancy Drew

                      2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children?
Well, the children bit is questionable, but see Question 1 and add Harry Potter to the mix.

                      3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything?
I have re-read the Enid Blytons on occasions and was sad that I wasn’t as addicted as I was when I read them the first time :o(

                      4. How old were you when you first learned to read?
Can’t remember being not able to read. Four?

                      5. Do you remember the first ‘grown-up’ book you read? How old were you?
I think it was either The Saint or an Agatha Christie - I would have been about nine. I read them and collect them both still - I know no shame.

                      The Friday Five 011

                        1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?
                        Yes. Alison.

                        2. Are you still in touch with this person?
                        No.

                        3. Do you have a current close friend?
Well…I do, but not up here in Queensland. Woe.

                        4. How did you become friends with this person?
                        By being involved in theatre/drama.

                        5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?
Well, occasionally I feel like I wish I was in regular contact with David Wilson or Kirsty. Why? Because David and I enjoy harrassing each other and I’d like to know whether Kirsty survived to reach age thirty.

                        The Friday Five 012

                          1. If your life were a movie, what would the title be?
                          The Baffling Bi-Ped Called Beth

                          2. What songs would be on the soundtrack?
                          It would feature;
Death to the MF - for the angsty bits
Carolyn’s Fingers - for the blissful bits
Peter Gunn Theme - for the suspenseful bits
Elevator music - for the boring office-work bits
Random Piano music - for the writing bits
Live Bidston Moss - for the gigging bits

                          3. Would it be a live-action film or animated? Why?
It would be live-action and animated, because I’d be in all the live-action bits and then when I got tired I’d get Dylan to animate me.

                          4. Casting: who would play you, members of your family, friends, etc?
Hum. I think that I would be played (if I didn’t play myself) by Parker Posey, Rose Byrne, or…hmmm, Helena Bonham Carter (purely for her hair quality). M would be played by Clive Owen (hee hee), Susan Sarandon would play my mother and Sean Connery could…oh…no he couldn’t. Having a lust object for a father is just too weird. I was going to make my dad played by Ian (newsreader for ABC-TV in Melbourne, but he’s a bit too tasteful also). I think my sister would be played by Meryl Streep and my brother…hum…Jude Law (as he doesn’t really do it for me). I would also have Viggo Mortensen play a family friend.

                          5. Describe the movie preview/trailer.

Snappy. Fast edits. Hooky guitar riffs. Me looking dazzling in a variety of exciting locations…then some dramatic moments of anger and sorrow…followed by me drinking a Coopers Sparkling Ale driving the Humber into the sunset…

                          The Friday Five 013

                            1. What time do you wake up on weekday mornings?
If left alone by alarm clocks etc. I sleep until about 8am, if I’m working….maybe 7am or so.

                            2. Do you sleep in on the weekends? How late?
Not unless I’ve had a grand night out. I like getting up early and going to markets and garage sales. But it’s better to stay horizontal if hungover.

                            3. Aside from waking up, what is the first thing you do in the morning?
                            Have a shower.

                            4. How long does it take to get ready for your day?
Depends on the day. Sometimes, if I feel fancy, I will bother with make-up and dither over what to wear - that can take up to 45 minutes…most days I just avoid the mirror, slap on some clothes and hope for the best. Approximately 10 minutes.

                            5. When possible, what is your favorite place to go for breakfast?
I very much like Feedback Cafe in Yarraville - right near my old house. Hervey Bay is very much lacking in the cafe department. Most of them have instant coffee and white bread. Oh dear. It’s good for saving money!

                            The Friday Five 014

                              1. What’s the last place you traveled to, outside your own home state/country?
I moved states!! Before that it would have been Sydney.

                              2. What’s the most bizarre/unusual thing that’s ever happened to you while traveling?
                              I’m so boring, I can’t think of a thing.

                              3. If you could take off to anywhere, money and time being no object, where would you go?
Hmmm. Rome. Then Thailand. Then Portugal….

                              4. Do you prefer traveling by plane, train or car?
                              Car, then train….

                              5. What’s the next place on your list to visit?
I want to explore further up the coast in Queensland - maybe Townsville….

                              The Friday Five 015

                                1. How much time do you spend online each day?
Hmmm…averaging it out I think it’s probably about three hours a day, but somedays I don’t touch it and other days I spend all day glued to the monitor.

                                2. What is your browser homepage set to?
                                www.google.com.au

                                3. Do you use any instant messaging programs? If so, which one(s)?
Occasionally I use ICQ to chat to people overseas. When I get my life sorted I think I’ll use it more to chat to people in Melbourne.

                                4. Where was your first webpage located?

On a dodgy server at LaTrobe University under someone elses student number.

                                5. How long have you had your current website?
I’ve got about four current websites, but the Bidston Moss one has been running the longest - about 6 years.

                                The Friday Five 016

                                  1. When was the last time you laughed?
                                  Laughed hysterically? Monday.

                                  2. Who was the last person you had an argument with?
I avoid conflict like the plague. I don’t argue, I hide under a rock. That said, I was rather heated on the phone today…to the evil BANK.

                                  3. Who was the last person you emailed?
                                  My boss.

                                  4. When was the last time you bathed?
Bathed? As in a proper bath? I had a bath the day I arrived in Melbourne. It was divine. I am going to have another one, again in Ellise’s bath tomorrow. Yeah!

                                  5. What was the last thing you ate?
*smirk* a chocolate Lindt ball. Three chocolate Lindt balls.

                                  The Friday Five 017

                                    1. Are you going to school this year?
Kind of. I’ve been doing my masters, but hopefully that’s almost over.

                                    2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate?
Swinburne University - they’re terribly disorganised.

                                    3. What are/were your favorite school subjects?
                                    Hum. English and drama.

                                    4. What are/were your least favorite school subjects?
                                    Maths.

                                    5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite?
Yes, I had a favourite teacher, his name was (still is actually) Russell Davies and he was my fave because I thought he looked like Magnum P.I

                                    The Friday Five 018

                                      1. Is the name you have now the same name that’s on your birth certificate? If not, what’s changed?
                                      Yep.

                                      2. If you could change your name (first, middle and/or last), what would it be?
Hmm, I think I’d like either a romantic novelist name like Evangeline Devereux or a cool name like Astrid Solange….or maybe I could change my nationality and my last name and become a Kiwi called Beth Smith - which I would pronounce in my Kiwi accent as Bith Smith :o)

                                      3. Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)
I have no idea. I think I was named Beth because I was previously named Kate but apparently didn’t look like one, so it was swiftly changed *shrugs*

                                      4. Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?
I feel bad suggesting names that I hate, because it’s doubtful that everyone who is named Gretchen or Alma or Cedric is a bad person. It is equally (and unfortunately) doubtful that everyone called Simon Templar is actually dashing and piratical.

                                      5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com / triggur.org / astroexpert accurate? How or how isn’t it?
Ooh. I haven’t been to these sites for ages….lets see:
                                      kabalarians.com:
Your name brings opportunities for success in business and financial accumulation. It fires you with ambition and promotional ideas, ideas that are original, progressive, and large-scale. With this name, success to you is a foregone conclusion, for you cannot conceive any reason for not reaching all your goals, as you have self-sufficiency, supreme confidence, boundless energy, and enthusiasm. As long as you have a sense of freedom from monotony and drudgery, and can see progress being made, you feel buoyant and optimistic. However, obstacles and frustration can give rise to feelings of impatience, intolerance, and depression. The ever-present desire to progress does not allow you proper relaxation or the proper expression of the softer feminine qualities of sympathy, encouragement, and affection. Others see you as rather shrewd and calculating.
                                      (Huh.)
triggur.org: (now this is just mean)
Your name is from the Greek root meaning “Licker of Toads”
(it does go on at length, but I won’t bore you further….)

                                      The Friday Five 019

                                        1. What vehicle do you drive?
                                        A Humber Supersnipe Series 4

                                        2. How long have you had it?
                                        Maybe seven or eight years?

                                        3. What is the coolest feature on your vehicle?
It’s walnut dash and pull out tables in the back.

                                        4. What is the most annoying thing about your vehicle?
That I don’t have a carport to put it in *sob*

                                        5. If money were no object, what vehicle would you be driving right now?
I’d still be driving my Humber, but for zipping around? I’d have a Triumph Stag, an Aston Martin, a Sunbeam Alpine and an S series Valiant.

                                        The Friday Five 020

                                          1. Do you watch sports? If so, which ones?
I watch the AFL Grand Final religiously every year, the Melbourne Cup if I can and netball if it’s on the box.

                                          2. What/who are your favorite sports teams and/or favorite athletes?
I have to say Collingwood for the AFL or Jock will savage me repeatedly. I’m feeling quite fond of John Bertrand at present because I was pretty keen on his book.

                                          3. Are there any sports you hate?
I hate boxing - don’t know why it would even be labelled a ’sport’.

                                          4. Have you ever been to a sports event?
                                          Um…..YES! The cricket.

                                          5. Do/did you play any sports (in school or other)? How long did you play?
I played netball for about five or six years - I liked it very much.

                                          The Friday Five 021

                                            1. Name five things in your refrigerator.
                                            Cheese. Milk. Broccoli. Ice. Mustard.

None yet - it’s not plugged in!

                                            3. Name five things under your kitchen sink.
Don’t have one as of yet.

                                            4. Name five things around your computer.
Oh. The phone. A mandarine. A cd. A credit card. A notebook.

                                            5. Name five things in your medicine cabinet.
Don’t have one - we have some Dettol and some band-aids floating around.

                                              1. What was your first Halloween costume?
                                              I was a small green-faced witch.

                                              2. What was your best costume and why?
Hmmm. See above. Because I was unidentifiable.

                                              3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn’t give you a treat?
Yes - green spaghetti on the front door step. They rang the school and complained, but we never confessed.

                                              4. Do you have any Halloween traditions? (ie: Family pumpkin carving, special dinner before trick or treating, etc.)
                                              Nope.

                                              5. Share your favorite scary story…real or legend!
Probably the worn out urban myth about the psychopath banging the guys severed head on the car roof with his girlfriend sitting inside….eeek!

Bloody email hasn’t worked for two days. I have nothing to do and nowhere to go for tonight and Saturday night, which just makes me a super-lame-o-losergirl. I’ve just seen Gettin’ Square and it was bloody great. Here’s my Friday Five goddamnit.

                                                1. What food do you like that most people hate?

                                                2. What food do you hate that most people love?
                                                Mangos. Ugh.

                                                3. What famous person, whom many people may find attractive, is most unappealing to you?
RACHAEL HUNTER and RENEE ZELLWEGER…they baffle me, they really do.

                                                attractive?

Oooh eee. Come on down, Ian Henderson, ABC evening newsreader in Melbourne.

                                                5. What popular trend baffles you?
The use of the words ‘bling-bling’. Courtesy of Lisa the other night who brought it to my attention.

Yes. Because I am addicted to retail therapy.

                                                        2. What was the last thing you purchased?
Fly spray, mozzie coils…a vanilla slice.

I like both - though shopping in cyberspace is less guilt inducing as you don’t actually see yourself handing over the cash….

                                                        4. Did you get an allowance as a child? How much was it?
Yes…can’t remember, but I think it increased with age and depended on my behaviour *sigh*
                                                        5. What was the last thing you regret purchasing?
My printer - not enough research done before buying. Impulse buying is generally bad.

                                                        The Friday Five 027

                                                          1. Do you enjoy the cold weather and snow for the holidays?
No - the total opposite. And I think this semi-tropical climate I’m currently living in is going to provide me with the warmest Christmas so far.

                                                          2. What is your ideal holiday celebration? How, where, with whom would you celebrate to make things perfect?
Hmmm. Ideal holiday celebration involves a cocktail of long-weekend, lots of friends, food, drink and a bit of family stuff as well. Australia Day back in January was pretty rocking ;o)

                                                          3. Do you do have any holiday traditions?
Um, not really. My holiday traditions kind of ended when I moved out of home. I used to have a cool calendar that you opened the doors on every morning as a countdown to Christmas, we would always hang stockings on Christmas Eve. I would almost always go home and sleep over on Christmas Eve after I’d moved out of home. Um. I think I’ve been for drinks at Lisa’s parents house on Christmas Day for it to be sort of a tradition…um….

                                                          4. Do you do anything to help the needy?
OK. I am bad. I think I should buy some Salvation Army Christmas cards and donate to the pub in Maryborough that is funding the rebuilding of a yacht that exploded last week.

                                                          5. What one gift would you like for yourself?
A laptop that no one is going to take off me. And a surge protector.

                                                          The Friday Five 028

                                                            1. What was your biggest accomplishment this year?
Managing to survive buying a house.
                                                            Getting my Masters in Writing.

                                                            2. What was your biggest disappointment?
Having someone else buy the house during negotiations.

                                                            3. What do you hope the new year brings?
                                                            A bit more prosperity ;o)
                                                            Maybe some job security?
                                                            An inflated house price…

                                                            4. Will you be making any New Year’s resolutions? If yes, what will they be?
To write more - ideally 1000 words a day - not for work.
                                                            To do more recording.
To separate work and working on the house better - to do more work on the house.

                                                            5. What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?
Well so far two plans have fallen through - going to meet up with people in Sydney, or heading to the Woodford Folk Festival. Not sure what we’re going to do - am very broke, so…..I have to do some serious strategising!

                                                            The Friday Five 029

                                                              1. What does it say in the signature line of your emails?
                                                              Nothing.

                                                              2. Did you have a senior quote in your high school yearbook? What was it? If you haven’t graduated yet, what would you like your quote to be?
We don’t tend to have yearbooks in Australia. I have had a look at my mother’s and it looks like something out of Happy Days.

                                                              3. If you had vanity plates on your car, what would they read? If you already have them, what do they say?
                                                              They would read: HUMBER

                                                              4. Have you received any gifts with messages engraved upon them? What did the inscription say?
Can’t tell, it would make me blush.

                                                              5. What would you like your epitaph to be?
                                                              I Knew This Would Happen.

At this moment, what is your favorite…

                                                                1. …song?
I’m liking The Shins - So Says I

                                                                2. …food?
                                                                Hmmmm. Risotto in a box.

                                                                3. …tv show?
Teachers - and I wish it had a decent webpage, but if it does, I can’t find it.

                                                                4. …scent?
Hmmm. Maybe Ralph by Ralph Lauren? (naming a perfume ‘Ralph’ is somewhat disconcerting though - particularly if you were like every other girl in my grade six class and read Judy Blume’s Forever. If we’re not talking perfume, then I’ll go with garlic frying in a hot pan of olive oil.

                                                                5. …quote?
“Ah, ” said Arthur, “this is obviously some strange usage of the word safe that I wasn’t previously aware of. “

You have just won one million dollars:

                                                                  1. Who do you call first?
My bank account. To hear the electronic voice read that balance.

                                                                  2. What is the first thing you buy for yourself?
A tropical island getaway package so I could think about how I’d spend the rest of it.

                                                                  3. What is the first thing you buy for someone else?
Boat bits for M. Or maybe air tickets for all my friends to come and party with me.

                                                                  4. Do you give any away? If yes, to whom?
Probably Amnesty International and the Lost Cats Home.

                                                                  5. Do you invest any? If so, how?
Hmmm. In real estate and shares. Maybe.

                                                                  The Friday Five 032

                                                                    Um, about four months ago?

                                                                    2. …went to the dentist?
In August. I have the Fear.

No wonder parents hate it - not only does it cause serious fights when there’s only one in the Variety Pack - but the kid that finally gets it spends the rest of the day on some psycho sugar high.

                                                                      5. …your favorite thing to do after school?
