Our second outing to meet up with other homeschoolers/unschoolers. This time at Mushroom Reef in Flinders. A beautiful beach. At low tide Small Z found herself a six-year-old and they scampered over the rocks, testing out rockpools and squealing at crabs.
Small DB hung out with me. We found shells and rocks for her little bucket. In the last month or so she has become shy. As we neared the big group of people she tugged on my arm,
“Pick me up mama! Pick me up!!”
I hoisted her on to my hip. We laid our our towel amongst the others and had a little chat before spending some more time out on the rocks. Small Z had a great time fossicking running with her new acquaintance. She can’t swim and it is beginning to annoy her – I suspect that this might be the motivating factor in her deciding to really learn in the coming months.
After several hours on the beach we went and bought a few of my favourite donuts at the Flinders Bakery. I keep striving for the perfect iced coffee – this time I described it thus: “Like a macchiato – not much milk – ice-cream is fine…” And lo…the ice coffee was brought too me exactly as I had described. I’d forgotten to ask for ice and/or assumed that cooled coffee would be used. Undrinkable.
The Smalls were in fast-food heaven. I took them over the road to the playground and was quietly amazed at Small Z’s power of recall. She remembered being there back before Small DB could even sit up… The play equipment is great. Small DB got around the entire thing without help – people keep assuming she is three years old because she is so tall… She is yet to hit two-and-a-half…
