Hi, I would chose Gramercy as well. It's about a half hour walk to the other districts mentioned save for The Upper East side -Manhattan is big but not as big as it looks and a bus, taxi or the subway are always available. There seem to be cool bars, etc... everywhere but on my Manhattan travels I mostly end up in The East Village and Lower East Side. The Bars/Music places I frequent are Mercury Lounge, The Living Room, Pianos, Cake Shop, Club Midway, The Sidewalk Cafe, Rockwood Music Hall, etc.... Near Gramercy are The Blender Theater, Irving Plaza/Fillmore, Otto's Shrunken Head and others. So yea, Gramercy with the "key" as a major plus in the choice.. Brooklyn is not to far off too. I fancy the Williamsburg section.

See http://www.thedelimagazine.com/ for a massive list of NYC bands to maybe see.

Take care.
