The night was long and sad. Buns was no better this morning. Our priority was for her not to feel horrible, so we trudged back to the vet this morning having decided that Buns would be better off having a painless goodbye nap. M was so brave and true. I wasn’t and stayed in the waiting room. It was so sad. As we paid at the front counter before leaving the vet-cat jumped up on to the counter and was all affectionate. I said that it reminded me of Oscar - the Cat Who Senses Death. I felt a bit happier that it was trying to comfort us. Momentarily happier.
“Oh no, he does that to everyone,” said the receptionist.
I deflated.
“What’s his name?” asked M.
We felt that her response, considering what had just killed our rabbit, was somewhat insensitive.
“His name’s Virus - he goes to everyone.”
M couldn’t help himself. “WHAT? His name’s Virus?”
She looked at us, crazy sad dead rabbit people.
“No. Boris. BORIS. He loves people. He’s very friendly.”
So we exited the veterinary with a sort of combined giggling and hicupping. RIP Buns - you were our only and best most excellent rabbit.
