As a William McInnes fan, a Noni fan and a huge Grassroots fan, I held great hopes for the telemovie that was on the ABC tonight - Stepfather of the Bride. M made it home just as it started and we pulled our chairs close to our tiny television. I suppose my expectations were too high (helped along by Catherine Deveny’s clamouring review in the Age).
It was all a bit of a yawn. Spur of the minute proposal, bride plans budget blowing bazillion dollar wedding while respectively dysfunctional families hand over more and more cash. Groom gets increasingly disenchanted. Funeral helps mend family fractures…etc. etc.
The main highlight for me was the use of The Girls From the Clouds track Beyond the Clouds. Hopefully that earned them a few bucks. Otherwise, it was all a bit slapped together, which was summed up when the credits rolled and the name of the bride ‘Skye’ was spelt ‘Syke’. Nice one.

seepi typed this on Nov 14 06 at 8:56 pmheh - I noticed Syke too - but I was looking to check that the actress Lucy Taylor was someone I studied with - sure enough she was.
- I thought it was perfectly watchable - first Australian thing I’ve watched in quite sometime.
