All has been quiet since New Years Eve. A splendid night was had. We did not endeavour to do anything wondrous and wild, we just steamed a stack of mussels, ate a lot of salads and drank much red wine. There were six of us plus a baby sleeping in a port-a-cot in the next room and a good time was had by all. I spent the next day cleaning up, recovering from red wine and sleeping on and off. Quite catlike in fact. Yesterday morning was a great cause for depression - I realised that the 6th of January is actually this coming Monday. I had been under the impression that I had all of next week off work :o( Not true. I can’t believe I have to go back in on Monday. Very sad.
I spent yesterday trying to get over my horror of Monday, which was not helped by realising how very far behind I have got with my weekly 500 word discussion topics for my uni course - argh!! I’m about seven posts (= seven weeks) behind. Oh dear. So I got three done yesterday - even though one was more of a rant about crappy academic writing that average people can’t understand. My tutor drowns in her own unnecessary wordiness - how about this for a sentence:
Undertaking a writing project confronts us with opening up the possibilities of utilising some aspects of the many feminist positions and ideas to investigate the potentials offered to a project by feminist writing models of laterality and singularity.
[gags]
This is such a wank. It makes me want to throw my laptop across the room. If her thoughts on ‘cyberfeminist poetics’ are so important, why doesn’t she discuss them in language that everyone can understand. I think it’s academia’s way of making everyone else feel dumber than them. [grinds teeth] I have emailed my rant to my dad before posting it to my discussion group and asked him to let me know if I’m being to savage in my response. Grrr.
Went out last night to dinner with Red as my date to say goodbye to D who has broken up with his boyfriend and has left this morning to go and work in Tasmania on the Ten Days on the Island festival for about four or five months. I may wander over to visit if I ever finish my 25,000 words. Tasmania is very beautiful and a foody paradise. I am always torn about wanting to fly there (it takes about an hour and is very cheap at present) but also knowing that if you get the boat you can take your car and get to see many more places (not to mention have somewhere to sleep, at a pinch). *sigh*
I was just listening to Radio National and there was a doco produced by Tim Bowden about the ANZAC POW’s in WWII. After it was finished I heard the announcer speaking and the voice was increadibly familiar! It took me about three minutes before I figured out who it was - Dan from Wobbly Radio! She is on the ball - and sounded great! Very ABC.
